OPEN LIBRARY LENDING MODEL

Understanding what happens before clicking “BORROW”

Read full article Collage showing old library checkout cards overlapping with a digital screenshot of The Hobbit on the Open Library website, highlighting the transition from physical to digital borrowing.
  • 01.

    THE PROBLEM

Loan duration unknown before clicking Borrow. Users make decisions without understanding conditions.

  • 02.

    THE SOLUTION

Making loan conditions visible upfront. Clear labeling across all borrowing states.

  • 03.

    THE VALIDATION

Early user interviews confirmed 80%+ could explain loan conditions before borrowing. Ready for implementation.

Content and state model diagram featuring four user need cards: 1. 'I want to read this now' backed by r/AskReddit; 2. 'I want to know if I can have it' backed by r/libgen and Github issue 1754; 3. 'I want to understand what I'm borrowing' based on direct observation and Github issue 10019; and 4. 'I want options if I can't have it now' based on multiple Github issues. Each card includes a direct user quote explaining their expectations or friction with the borrowing system.

[ ABOUT ME ]

I like building things that sit between technical constraints and human behavior.

I started in frontend, but the problems I enjoy most don't stop at the UI.
